Music
Lower School
Lower School Music engages every student from Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth Grade in singing, playing instruments, and movement. Basic elements of music, and an appreciation for the cultures from which it stems are learned as students gain listening and performing skills. Students explore Orff instruments, recorders, ukuleles, keyboards, African drums, string orchestral instruments, and vocal techniques throughout the music program. Students leave Lower School music equipped with the musical knowledge necessary to join Middle and Upper School Music classes and ensembles.
Middle School
The Miami Country Day School Music Department provides a foundation level program that offers students the fundamental elements of music theory, technique, and performance. Classes and curricular ensembles include string, wind, vocal, and percussion. Performances comprise classical groups such as band and orchestra, along with a pop group called “Radio Ensemble.” A variety of extra-curricular opportunities are also available for students involved in the music program. Some of these programs include competition at district and state festivals that offer musicians the ability to participate as soloists and/or members of chamber ensembles. Additionally, the Middle School Music students partake annually at the Florida All-State Music Competition and Festival where they are given the opportunity to perform in a national music festival with their peers.
Upper School
In Upper School Music we strive to hone student’s skills in music to the point where they are comfortable as performers in large ensembles and in smaller sized groups as well. We study a wide variety of music genres and encourage students to explore the music of many different artists. In depth study of classical, jazz, rock, pop, and reggae music is integral to our Upper School Music curriculum. Our Contemporary Music Ensemble (CME) is a student driven ensemble that performs at educational conferences, at various outdoor venues, and street festivals in communities all over the state of Florida. The curricular program includes an orchestra, a jazz band, chorus, a pep band, and classes in all levels of guitar.
