COEP will challenge students in three major areas: academic skills, outdoor and physical tasks, and individual and group leadership development. The goals and expectations of COEP are to complement and enhance traditional education by offering hands-on experience in life skills that will provide the student necessary tools to meet the challenges of the 21st century. COEP is based on implementing and combing three core areas of development during a school year, using a daily standard class schedule. The curriculum utilizes areas including camping and backpacking skills, orienteering (using a compass), first aid, and survival skills. Sub-areas are local, state and national history with an emphasis on recreational land usage, environmental and ecological issues, zoological and botanical studies, journal writing and development of individual interests in related areas, like literature, art of photography. COEP is a year-long course developing field experience through weekend trips that actively develop individual and group skills. The major objective of COEP is to develop and enhance leadership, teamwork, and individual goals.
"COEP is an amazing program out of Miami Country Day School. COEP stands for Comprehensive Outdoor Education Program, I feel it’s a great way to explore and discover new things with friends. On the weekend trips, you have something to do during the weekend and always have fun. Even when it starts rough at the beginning you will always find a way to make new friends and have fun. You can take my word I’ve been on every weekend trip and the summer trek to Alaska. As time goes on and Torreya gets to know you better, you can get a COEP camp name. I got Wolverine on the summer trek. During the treks, you explore thing that you never new and things you never would do with your family. At first, you may get a little worried and home sick but after the first hour you will have so much fun you forget your not going to be there with your parents. In class we do and learn survival skills for the wilderness like tying knots, setting up tents, archery, and learn about the animals we might encounter on the trips and what to do. Overall the year is fantastic and you will learn things you never thought you would. I never had camped or was out in the wild before COEP and had no idea how to set up a tent and what to do in the nature but now I know. COEP will be with me my whole life not only from the experiences but the friends, learning, and the adults. I hope lots of kids join and take advantage of this amazing program." COEP in Lower School

Students in Grade 5 are introduced to COEP as a twice-a-week semesterly enrichment class. Students receive an introduction to outdoor skills such as map reading, basic camping skills, and fishing. We also explore Florida wildlife and the Leave no Trace Philosophy. 5th Grade students are offered day trips each year to the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary and the Biscayne Nature Center. They are also offered an overnight camping experience.

COEP in Middle School

COEP is offered in Grade 6 (Rangers), Grade 7 (Navigators), and Grade 8 (Pathfinders) during the school year as an elective. These classes are graded in the same manner as any Middle School course. The COEP three week treks that take place during the summer are fully paid for by the participants and are adventure-based treks. No grades are assigned to students who participate in the summer treks.
