John Davies Cultural Arts Series

The Miami Country Day School Arts Department is pleased to present the John Davies Cultural Arts Series. We are committed to sharing our beautiful new Center for the Arts with the community through cultural outreach and opportunities for visiting artists, performers and thought leaders.

When visualizing the many ways this will contribute to the enrichment of our school community and Miami at large, it seemed fitting to name the series for the leader who had the foresight and commitment to make the Center for the Arts a reality, Dr. John Davies.

Dr. Davies has long been an advocate of the Arts and its centrality to the mission of Miami Country Day School. He is an artist in his own right and his Robert Indiana- inspired sculpture (pictured to the right) welcomes visitors as they enter our campus.

Our cultural arts series honors Dr. Davies and enriches our learning community in ways that were not possible before his leadership. We are grateful to the Board, administration, faculty, staff, parents and students who played a part in elevating our community and are making it possible to celebrate the Arts for many years to come.

Gaspar Gonzalez - Thursday, October 24

This Cultural Arts Series event, Adventures in Documentary Filmmaking: An Evening with Gaspar Gonzalez, is open to the public and completely free. Please join us for the screening of Gaspar's recent documentary, Errol Flynn's Ghost: Hollywood in Havana followed by a Q & A session and conversation about the filmmaker's career.

Stiletto Brass - February 7

Stiletto Brass Quintet, formed in 2010, has gained exposure as a leading ensemble with performances audiences greeted with rousing ovations at the International Trumpet Guild Conference, International Women’s Brass Conference, with Doc Severinsen and the Heartland Festival Orchestra, the St. Louis Low Brass Consortium, the Northeast Regional Tuba/Euphonium Conference, the, the National Trumpet Competition, the Great American Brass Band Festival, and concerts throughout the United States. The ensemble has also shared the stage with Italian jazz great Andrea Tofanelli and premiered a new composition written for the group entitled Scarpe!

This Cultural Arts Series event is open to the public and completely free. This important presentation and Q&A discussion focuses on the intersection of technology and culture and its effects on our thoughts and perceptions. You will learn vital and relevant information on the personal and social consequences of our ever growing dependency on computers, robots, and apps on you and your family.

After registering, you will receive an email confirmation with your ticket information. Please bring your confirmation with you on the evening of the performance, seating is general admission. The event should last for approximately an hour and a half.

In 1981, seven Yale women came together to form the university’s first and only senior women’s a cappella group. Today Whim ‘n Rhythm is a nonprofit organization comprised of thirteen of the best senior female singers at Yale.

Since its foundation, the members of Whim ‘n Rhythm have recorded professional studio albums and traveled to every continent, all while promoting the role of women in higher education and music.
